seal eye-tracking activity troubleshooting tips

Please email (shuffreylab@nyulangone.org) or text us (347-978-3267) if you run into any issues! We’ll respond as soon as possible during business hours (9 AM–5 PM EST).

General Setup Tips

  • For the tasks to work, your device's welcome needs to have a full, straight-on view of your child's face.
  • We recommend trying the tasks at a time when your child is likely to be calm and attentive (for example, when they’re not tired or hungry).
  • You may run into problems if your child moves too much, and their face goes out of frame.

Positioning your baby and device

  • We recommend placing your device (e.g., laptop) on a table, while you sit in a chair with your child seated on your lap, facing your device.
  • You may wish to place your child on a cushion on your lap so that they can sit higher up. Ideally, your child’s eyes will be in the center of the frame, like the picture to the right.
  • Please make sure your own face is out of frame, so the camera only detects your child’s face. To help with this, we ask that you wear sunglasses and a hat to obscure your own face. You can also tilt your screen down slightly.

Common Issues During the Task and How to Troubleshoot FAQs

What if my software is stuck during calibration and cannot continue?

If a task cannot continue for some reason (e.g., you see the screen “calibration failed” or “you lost your head pose” multiple times), feel free to exit and try again later. You may also want to try using a different device (e.g., a laptop instead of a tablet), and/or a different browser (e.g., Chrome instead of Safari).

What if I am stuck on the loading screen?

The task requires a strong internet connection since it involves streaming long videos. If you are stuck on the loading screen, try checking your internet or using a mobile hotspot.

What device should I do the eye-tracking activity on?

Due to some reported technical issues when using iPads, we kindly ask that participants complete the eye-tracking activities on a laptop instead. Using a laptop helps ensure the activities run smoothly and that the eye-tracking works properly.
